We left Akyaka around 9am ready to explore the beaches. We stopped by the hidden and secluded Iztuzu beach and had our first swim in the Aegean. Interesting process to go from motorcycle gear to swim gear and back. Getting on the motorcycle completely soaked in this heat is nice!
It is amazing the calm and joy that comes when one is totally immersed in nature. And the awe that comes when swiming in a beautiful ocean. The world slows down and everything makes a little more sense.
So, what is the deal with the coasts around the Mediterranean? Incredibly tall mountains dropping sharply right before the ocean, great twisty roads next to the water, climbs and drops with amazing views, and deep blue and incredibly clear waters ... Croatia, Amalfi, Greece, and now Turkey too?
After lunch, the temperature hit 100 so we decided to stop by another beach by the road and have another swim while we waited for the sun to go down. Great culture immersion and people watching.
After our last swim of the day, we hit the road to try to get to Antalya before nightfall. Interesting how there are steep mountain ranges with pine trees, fog and mist just slightly inland from the coast. At some point Alexandra tells me to look up and there it was Mount Olympus, through the clouds. A tall, very nearby, massive peak, illuminated by the sun, peaking above the clouds, either floating in mid-air or the base was just hidden by the fog. Who knows.
Antalya is a big city. We entered the city as the rain started which made for very slippery pavement that made us go 2 mph as we approached the roman gates to the walled city where our hotel was.
Went for a night walk around the walled city, went back to the hotel, no dinner, and crashed. Literally. We could barely move. What a day!
