Spiritual Place

Spent the day walking around looking at some amazing views of Lake Baikal. The morning fog slowly burnt off and the views throughout the day were amazing.

It is understandable how this island is considered magical/spiritual by its people, the Buryat, the largest aboriginal group in Siberia. Sat on a rock overlooking the coast ... sat on a pebbled beach touching the water ... watched people camping, walking, singing, doing yoga, playing, taking pictures ... great place to think about the meaning of it all.

Below are some pictures ... hard to describe otherwise.

Dreading the way back to Irkutsk because of the mud. It is amazing how sandy the soil is ... the water had largely disappeared and the road back was uneventful. Waited for the ferry for a while ... while waiting met a Russian guy that was going around the world hitchhiking ... a couple of Paris Hilton Russian look-alikes with a tiny dog on a leash ... a guy from Korea that has been traveling for 4 years (he has been everywhere) ... also, met Sophie and her dad Christopher from Germany on a long father-daughter trip through the wilds of Russia ... is this a trend? : )

Made it back to Irkutsk ... time to plan how to get to Mongolia.

  2. These pictures are stunning. Magical, surreal. I can only imagine how you felt sitting there with that mist in your lungs. It must have been very enriching. An experience that you relive when you recall the details.
