Today, we travelled through Macedonia to get to Bulgaria as we continue our quest east. Macedonia was a pleasant surprise. Skopje was bright, energetic, colorful, with a great infrastructure. In Kumanovo, we met and had lunch and coffee with Yavik. A 60 year old man that had seen and lived a lot.
As we entered Bulgaria, it felt rural initially, and then old, industrial, and grey, the closer we got to Sofia. You can see that the city was a great city at some point. Now it just feels a bit run down and tired ... this set up and the Cyrillic signs everywhere feels like old communist Russia.
How did Macedonia and Bulgaria, with different people and culture, end up with a very similar alphabet?
Through all this, I managed to get an official Macedonian police patch for my jacket! Tomorrow, Romania and Transilvania. 11 countries down, 11 to go.
