Latin Soul

Today's adventure began on the Transfagarasan pass. The approach is truly magnificent ... from flat farm fields to a wall of snow capped mountains. The road heads straight to this wall and the climb begins. The pass is closed until June 15. Determined to see it, I went around the roadblock and kept climbing. Tornantes, rock slides, road damage, fallen trees, and snow with the most amazing views ... what a great ride, with the best that nature has to offer. Climbed 2,000 meters, almost to the top, until the road was buried in snow. On my way down, I met the owner of the lodge at the top of the pass. He opened the gondola so we could ride it up to the top to have coffee at his place ... there is a beautiful lake at the top and an ice hotel!

Bucharest is like a combination of Budapest and Mexico City. European but with the Latin flair, chaos, energy, traffic, and friendliness. Rules are just guidelines but it all works. Great architecture.

What makes the people and the culture of a place be what it is? History, tradition, genes, experiences, pain, hope? I think Romania has a good future.

Tomorrow, the Black Sea in Bulgaria.

  1. Incredible! Did you make it all th way through the pass or have to turn around? Reminds me of a recent adventure in Arkansas. ;-)
