Visiting places like Split and Dubrovnik makes you realize that human history is long and that our life span is so short. At best we get to see or participate in a a few key events within the context of thousands of years of human history. Split and Dubrovnik have had continuous and uninterrupted inhabitants since the years 300 and 700 respectively - so many life spans, so many stories, so many events.
Today, we rode into Bosnia-Herzegovina on our way to Dubrovnik. The southern part of Croatia is actually disconnected from the northern part by a small Bosnian territorial run into the sea. It is only 24km long and it is Bosnia's only coast. This apparently was decided back in 1699 when the Republic of Ragusa (Dubrovnik) gave it to the Ottoman Empire to protect itself from the encroaching Venice. Interesting.
After almost 2,000km since we left Germany, we are taking a day off tomorrow and staying in Dubrovnik one more night. The goal for tomorrow? Swim in the cold waters of the Adriatic!
